Big timber companies have entered the offset market previously dominated by nonprofits, land trusts, tribes and timberland investment managers. Photo: Amanda Andrade-Rhoades for For The Wall Street JournalInvestors who made one of the biggest timberland purchases in years with plans to make carbon deals said they sold more than $100 million of so-called forest offsets during the gambit’s first year. Aurora Sustainable Lands, created to carry out the biggest wager yet on forest-carbon markets, said it expects its 1.7 million acres of eastern U.S. forest to annually yield additional offsets worth between $60 million and $150 million at current prices. Aurora paid about $1.8 billion for the properties last year.

A wrong-way bet on the price of wood pellets has jeopardized America’s biggest exporter of the fuel, even though demand has never been higher among the European and Asia power plants burning wood instead of coal. Enviva said its gambit to buy pellets from a customer, and resell them for more, backfired when prices fell, and that nine-figure losses could trigger a default with its lenders by year-end.

Earnings selloffs in Cisco Systems and Walmart pulled down the Dow. But the broader market narrowly overcame those drags as well as tumbling energy shares to keep the November rally going. The S&P 500 added 0.1%. The tech-oriented Nasdaq Composite eked out a smaller gain than that and is now up 9.8% this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed about 0.1%, or 46 points.

VIDALIA, Ga.—Electric cars. Utilities bracing the grid for stronger storms. They all depend on the same thing: big trees. The utility-pole business is booming, thanks to a flood of public and private infrastructure spending. So the hunt is on for the tallest, straightest, knot-free conifers, which are peeled, dried and pressure-treated at facilities such as Koppers Holdings ’ pole plant in southeastern Georgia’s pinelands.

The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% on Tuesday, to end October 2.2% lower. Every industry segment in the benchmark index rose, with real-estate companies, banks and utilities leading the way. Arista Networks paced the index, gaining 14% after the networking equipment company beat quarterly sales and profit expectations.

Households in the Pacific can expect to pay 30% less for gas this winter, on average, according to federal energy statisticians. Photo: David Crane/Zuma PressCheaper heating bills are in the forecast this winter for millions of Americans. Ample stockpiles of natural gas and expectations for a warmer-than-normal winter have forecasters from Wall Street to Washington calling for gas to cost much less than last year, when big utility bills busted household budgets, shocked business owners and helped drive inflation.

Illustration: Liz Ornitz/WSJThe lumber-futures contract that soared during the pandemic and heralded the Covid building boom, broken supply chains and inflation will trade in its final session on Monday.
